TDAP
This vaccine protects teens from three different diseases. Their common names are lockjaw, whooping cough and diphtheria.
- Lockjaw (tetanus) – Bacteria causes the tightening of the muscles that can lead to the jaw locking so the person cannot swallow or open their mouth.
- Whooping cough (pertussis) – Bacteria causes severe coughing, vomiting and inability to sleep that can lead to weight loss, passing out, pneumonia and hospitalization.
- Diphtheria – Bacteria causes a thick covering in the back of the throat that can lead to breathing problems, being paralyzed, heart failure and even death.
